External file source

This panel lets you manage how OVITO loads the input data for the data pipeline from an external source. The panel is automatically opened after you first import a data file. You can open it at any later time by selecting the first entry from the "Data source" section of the pipeline editor.

Toolbar

The toolbar at the top of the panel provides access to several basic functions, which will be described below:

Pick new file

Allows you to select a different file on disk, which will subsequently serves as new data source for the current data pipeline. All modifiers in the pipeline are retained, but the data they operate on is replaced.

Note that, when you switch to a new input file using this function, OVITO will not automatically recognize whether it is part of a sequence of numbered files. It will load just that one file you picked. In order to load en entire sequence of files, you will have to manually specify a corresponding filename pattern afterwards.

After loading the new file, OVITO automatically adjusts the viewports to show the entire dataset. If you want to suppress this behavior and keep the current view configuration, first use the Create Camera function from the viewport menu before loading the new data file.

Pick new remote file

Same as above, but allows you to enter a new remote URL instead of picking a file in the local filesystem.

Reload data

Reloads the data for the current animation frame from the external file. This is useful if the file has been changed externally, for example after re-running a simulation.

Update time series

Searches the directory for new files that match the current file pattern. When working with a file that contains multiple simulation frames, the file is re-scanned to rebuild the list of frames.

Animation panel

This sub-panel controls how simulation frames loaded from the input file(s) are mapped to OVITO's animation timeline. Please see the animation section in this user manual for further information on this advanced topic.
